How to A/B test an App Store product page

To A/B test an App Store product page, create a product page optimization test in App Store Connect with up to three treatments of the icon, screenshots or app previews, get any new assets approved by App Review, run it for up to 90 days and apply the treatment that App Analytics marks as performing better at 90% confidence.

The short answer

You choose what share of visitors sees a treatment, and Apple shows treatments only to people on iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 and later, runs one test per app at a time, and does not let a test change once it has started. Only the screenshots and app previews of a winning treatment can be applied straight to the default page: a winning icon has to be set as the default icon in the next app version, and every alternate icon has to be in the app's binary before a test can use it. On Startup and above, Forvibe's ASO Agent starts tests itself: it takes the custom product page it built that beat the default page by the most at its 28-day check, tests those screenshots on the default page, by default on 50% of visitors for 30 days, and leaves applying the winner to a person in App Store Connect. Run by hand or by the agent, a test answers only the question it was built to ask, so the useful ones change one thing at a time and run until Apple stops reporting that it is still collecting data.

The symptoms of changing a product page without testing it

A new screenshot set goes live for everyone at once, conversion moves, and nobody can say whether the screenshots did it or a holiday, a rank change or a feature on the Today tab did.

A test is stopped after a week because one treatment looks ahead, before Apple has called a result, and the winner that gets applied is noise.

A treatment changes the icon, the first screenshot and the preview together, so the result says it converted better but not which change helped.

A winning icon is applied and never shows up, because icons only change with a new app version.

How product page optimization works in App Store Connect

Product page optimization shows up to three treatments of your default product page to a random share of App Store visitors for up to 90 days, and reports which one converts better with a confidence level for each.

Up to 3 treatments
Each treatment can change the icon, screenshots or app previews. Anything you leave alone stays as it is on the original page.
You set the traffic
With a 30% traffic proportion and three treatments, each treatment reaches 10% of visitors and everyone else sees the original.
New assets go through App Review
Treatment assets are approved before the test starts. A test without a new icon can go to review without a new app version.
Icons live in the binary
Every alternate icon must be in the binary of the published app, and a winning icon becomes the default only in a later version.
90% confidence calls a result
App Analytics labels a treatment Performing Better or Performing Worse once it reaches 90% confidence against the baseline.
Applying ends the test
You apply one treatment per test, it can't be undone, and applying while the test runs stops it.

Product page optimization is Apple's built-in A/B test for the default App Store product page. A test compares the original page with up to three treatments, and each treatment can use an alternate app icon, alternate screenshots, alternate app previews or a mix; whatever a treatment does not replace stays as it is on the original. The app has to be live on the App Store in the Ready for Distribution state, and the test is set up by someone with the Account Holder, Admin, App Manager or Marketing role. You choose a traffic proportion, the share of visitors picked at random to see a treatment instead of the original: with three treatments and 30%, each treatment reaches 10% of visitors. A visitor keeps seeing the same treatment for the whole test, and only people on iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 and later are included. By default a test covers every localization the app supports; a visitor shown a localization the test excludes is left out of it. App Store Connect can estimate how long a test will take from the app's own daily impressions and downloads, and Apple suggests fewer treatments or more traffic when that estimate runs past 90 days. Any new metadata in a treatment has to be approved by App Review before the test can start. Alternate icons are a special case: every icon variant has to be included in the binary of the published app, while a test without alternate icons can be submitted for review independently of a new app version. Once started, a test can't be changed, and a stopped test can't be restarted; it runs for up to 90 days or until you stop it, and an app runs one test at a time. Results appear in App Analytics once five first-time downloads are attributed to the test, showing impressions, conversion rate, improvement over the baseline and a confidence level for each treatment. A treatment that reaches 90% confidence is labeled Performing Better or Performing Worse; until then it is Collecting Data, and one unlikely to get there within 90 days is marked Likely to be Inconclusive. You can apply one treatment per test to the original product page and to versions in Ready for Distribution or Prepare for Submission, the action can't be undone, and applying a treatment while the test runs stops the test. Only the treatment's screenshots and app previews are applied; a winning icon has to be set as the default icon in the next app version. Product page optimization tests the default page only: it is not available for custom product pages, which are separate pages reached through their own links and keywords. Google Play has its own version in Play Console, store listing experiments, which test graphics such as the icon, feature graphic and screenshots.

The sequence for running an App Store A/B test

  1. Pick one change and one question

Decide what you want to learn, for example whether a first screenshot that shows the result converts better than one that shows the interface. Apple recommends changing few elements per treatment, so the result points at the change that caused it.

  2. Build up to three treatments

In App Store Connect, open Product Page Optimization, create a test and add treatments. Anything you don't replace keeps the original icon, screenshots and previews. An alternate icon has to ship in the app's binary first.

  3. Choose the traffic and the languages

Set the traffic proportion and the localizations. Fewer treatments, more traffic and fewer languages all reach a result sooner, and the duration estimate uses your own impressions and downloads to show roughly how long.

  4. Send new assets to App Review

New screenshots, previews and icons in a treatment are approved before the test can start. A test without a new icon can go to review without a new app version.

  5. Start it and leave it alone

A running test can't be changed and a stopped one can't be restarted. Results show in App Analytics after five first-time downloads come from the test; wait until a treatment is Performing Better or Performing Worse at 90% confidence.

  6. Apply the winner

Apply the winning treatment to the default page and the versions you choose. Only its screenshots and previews carry over, and a winning icon becomes the default in your next app version.

  7. Or let the ASO Agent start tests from pages that already won

On Startup and above, Forvibe's ASO Agent takes the custom product page it built that beat the default page by the most at its 28-day check, sends a test of its screenshots to App Review, starts it, and stops it after 30 days by default. When the test ends, it asks you to read Apple's result and apply the winner.

Questions, answered

Yes. Product page optimization can test alternate icons, but each one has to be included in the binary of your published app before a test can use it. People in that treatment see the alternate icon on the App Store and, once they download the app, on their device. Applying the winning treatment does not change the icon: you set it as the default icon in your next app version.

Until App Analytics marks a treatment Performing Better or Performing Worse, which happens at 90% confidence. A test ends on its own after 90 days. If Apple marks a treatment Likely to be Inconclusive, there probably won't be enough data within 90 days, and fewer treatments or more traffic help the next test.

No. Product page optimization covers the icon, screenshots and app previews only. A change to the name, subtitle or keyword field is judged by comparing rank and conversion before and after it, which is how Forvibe's ASO Agent checks its wording changes, at 7 and 28 days.

Product page optimization tests your default page against up to three treatments, shown to a random share of all visitors, for up to 90 days. A custom product page is a separate page, up to 70 per app, that only people with its link or searching its assigned keywords see. Product page optimization is not available for custom product pages.

Yes. Play Console has store listing experiments, which test graphics such as the icon, feature graphic and screenshots, and in localized experiments the descriptions as well. Forvibe's ASO Agent runs tests on the App Store only.

No. On Startup and above it picks which page to test, sends the test to App Review, starts it and stops it after 30 days by default, which you can set anywhere from 7 to 90. It runs one test per app at a time and never applies a treatment: when a test ends it asks you to read Apple's result and apply the winner in App Store Connect. In Ask first, it asks before starting each test.
