Apple Ads vs ASO: Which Should an Indie App Do First?
Quick answer: For most indie apps, do ASO first and Apple Ads second. Every Apple Ads placement sends people to your App Store product page (default or custom), so a weak title, subtitle or screenshot set makes every paid tap more expensive. Once the page converts, a small Apple Ads campaign is the fastest way to learn which keywords bring installs, and those learnings feed straight back into your organic metadata. The two are not competitors; they share the same page and the same search box.
First, a naming update: Apple Search Ads is now Apple Ads
Apple renamed Apple Search Ads to Apple Ads in April 2025, because the ads no longer appear only in search. You will still see "ASA" in older articles and tools; it is the same product. The current help center lives at ads.apple.com.
What ASO controls
App Store optimization is everything you change on the product page to rank in search and turn views into downloads. Apple's own App Store search documentation says search results are based on a number of factors, including:
- Text relevance: matches for your app name, subtitle, keyword field and primary category.
- User behavior: downloads, ratings and reviews, and more.
On top of that, conversion depends on what people see: icon, screenshots, app previews, rating, and in some cases custom product pages assigned to specific keywords. Apple also states that promotional text doesn't affect search ranking, so keyword-stuffing it does nothing.
ASO costs time rather than money, and its results compound: a better listing helps every visitor, from every source, for as long as it is live. If you're new to it, start with our ASO guide for indie developers and the 30/30/100 keyword rule.
What Apple Ads controls
Apple Ads lets you pay for visibility in the App Store. Apple offers two products.
Apple Ads Advanced
According to Apple's comparison page and placement guide:
- Four placements: Today tab, Search tab, search results, and other apps' product pages ("You Might Also Like") while people browse.
- Cost-per-tap pricing, up to a maximum you set, with a daily budget and no monthly maximum.
- Keywords only on the search results placement, either through Manage Bids (you choose keywords) or Maximize Conversions (Apple's Search Match picks likely keywords).
- Custom product pages as ad variations, with optional deep links on iOS and iPadOS 18 and later.
- Access to the Apple Ads Platform API and the AdServices attribution API.
The Today tab placement requires a custom product page as the destination, and your name, icon, subtitle and page assets must be approved for advertising first.
Apple Ads Basic
- Search results only.
- Cost-per-install pricing: you pay for installs at a cost you choose.
- No keywords or audience settings; Apple's automation matches your ad.
- Up to US$10,000 per app, per month, and up to 50 apps.
Since March 2026, Apple Ads has been adding more ad positions inside search results, not just the top slot, and advertisers can't select or bid for a particular position.
How the two interact
This is where most "ASA vs ASO" comparisons go wrong. They treat it as a budget choice. In practice the two are wired together in three ways:
- Same destination. Paid taps land on your product page or a custom product page. If that page converts poorly, you pay for taps that don't install (Advanced) or you get fewer installs at your CPI target (Basic).
- Same metadata. Apple builds ads from the metadata and assets you already uploaded in App Store Connect. There is no separate ad copy to write for search results ads. Your title, subtitle and screenshots are the ad.
- Same data loop. Advanced campaigns show which search terms led to taps and installs. That's first-party Apple data about real queries, and it's the best input you'll ever get for your keyword field. App Analytics in App Store Connect also shows Apple Ads as a traffic source, so you can see paid and organic side by side.
When to start with ASO
Start with ASO, and hold off on paid spend, if any of these are true:
- Your product page has never been tested, and your first three screenshots don't explain the app on their own. Apple says up to three screenshots or previews can appear in search results, so they work as your ad creative too.
- You don't know your conversion rate from product page view to download in App Analytics.
- You have no idea what a user is worth to you (no trial-to-paid or retention numbers yet). Without that, you can't set a sensible max cost-per-tap or CPI.
- Your budget is close to zero. ASO costs hours, not dollars.
Fix the basics first: a title and subtitle with your main keywords, a clean 100-character keyword field, screenshots that show the core outcome, and replies to recent reviews.
When Apple Ads makes sense early
Apple Ads can come early when:
- You have no data at all. A small, tightly scoped Advanced campaign on a handful of exact-match keywords is a quick way to learn which terms convert. Treat it as paid research.
- You're launching into a competitive keyword where you can't rank organically for months, and you know your unit economics.
- You want to defend your brand name. Competitors can bid on it.
- You built custom product pages for different audiences. Advanced lets you send each keyword group to the page that matches its intent.
If you want hands-off spend, Basic is simpler: you set a budget and a cost-per-install, and Apple handles matching. The trade-off is that you don't get keyword-level data, which is most of what an indie developer learns from Apple Ads.
A practical order of operations
- Week 1: listing basics. Title, subtitle, keyword field, first three screenshots, and category. Write it all for one market first.
- Weeks 2 to 4: measure organic. Watch impressions, product page views and conversion rate in App Analytics.
- Week 3 onward: small Advanced test. A few exact-match keywords from your metadata plus a discovery ad group with Search Match, with a daily budget you can afford to lose.
- Feed the winners back. Search terms that install well at a reasonable cost belong in your title, subtitle or keyword field. Terms that get taps but no installs are a sign your page doesn't match that intent; consider a custom product page.
- Test the page. Use product page optimization to test up to three alternate screenshot or icon treatments against your original.
- Scale the channel that pays back. Organic improvements keep working when you pause ads. Paid traffic stops the day the budget does.
Common mistakes
- Running ads to an unfinished page. Every inefficiency on the page gets multiplied by your spend.
- Broad match with no negatives. Search Match and broad match are useful for discovery, but without negative keywords they spend on irrelevant queries.
- Ignoring the search terms report. It's the most valuable ASO input Apple gives you.
- Judging ASO in a week. Ranking changes from metadata updates take time to settle after a release. Compare equal periods before and after.
Where Forvibe fits
Forvibe is an AI ASO Agent for the App Store: it tracks your keywords per country, proposes listing changes, runs product page tests and replies to reviews, and you approve each change before it ships. It does not manage Apple Ads campaigns, but it's built to make the page your ads land on convert better, and to turn the keywords you discover into metadata. FAQ
Is Apple Search Ads the same as Apple Ads?
Yes. Apple renamed Apple Search Ads to Apple Ads in April 2025. The Basic and Advanced products continue under the new name.
Does running Apple Ads improve organic ranking?
Apple doesn't say that it does. What Apple does say is that user behavior such as downloads influences search results. Treat any organic lift from ads as a possible side effect, not a goal you can plan around.
How much does Apple Ads cost?
Advanced charges per tap up to the maximum you set, with a daily budget. Basic charges per install at a cost you choose, up to US$10,000 per app per month.
Should I use Basic or Advanced?
Advanced if you want keyword control, multiple placements and search term data. Basic if you want a set-and-forget campaign in search results only.
Can I do ASO without any tools?
Yes. App Store Connect's App Analytics, product page optimization and Apple Ads search terms data cover the essentials. Tools save time on keyword tracking across countries and on testing.
